MIRRORS IN STORIES Several stories are centered on the magic mirror, one bewitched, that talks or shows the opposite of what is really true. Such stories were a delight to young children in their early years. For example, the story of Snow White. The wicked stepmother possessed a mirror that had the ability to answer whatever question she asked. In reality, there are a few objects that could have actually inspired the blunt interpretation of this “magic mirror”. This device is called a Black Mirror (similar to the Crystal Ball). The Black Mirror is a black reflective glass, unlike the bright, regular mirror, has an entirely different purpose. The user of the Black Mirror would gaze into his or her reflection on the glass, with undivided concentration, the user’s reflection disappears, and the Black Mirror becomes a window to the Spirit World. This may be understood by some people to be just asking a magic mirror for the answer to your questions, because we should know by now that it doesn’t work. Mirrors are not only a motif in children’s fairy tales, but an element in the genre of Horror as well: in horror movies: the mirror hangs on the wall as the character walks by quickly in front. The reflection of the spirit following is seen only in the mirror. In older traditions, if someone dies in a house, the mirrors inside
must be covered enshrouded with cloth when the body is carried out past.
This comes from the belief that the spirit of the dead will become trapped
inside of the mirror if not covered. |
